Every child deserves to grow up breathing clean air and developing healthy lungs.

That's why we took bold action to tackle London's toxic air. Today, an independent study from Queen Mary University of London found that lung growth among children in Central London accelerated following the introduction of the ULEZ.

The findings are remarkable:

* Researchers tracked more than 3,400 children over five years in Central London and Luton.
* Children's exposure to harmful nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) fell twice as fast in Central London.
* Before ULEZ, children in Central London had significantly poorer lung function than children outside the capital.
* By the end of the study, their lung growth had caught up.
* The proportion of children with clinically impaired lung function fell from 14% to 9%.

These are powerful findings. But this is an important reminder that the ULEZ was always about much more than statistics. It’s about children breathing more easily, young Londoners enjoying healthier futures, and parents having one less thing to worry about.

That’s why I took difficult decisions to tackle London’s toxic air – because protecting Londoners’ health, especially our children’s health, had to come first. This research adds to a growing body of evidence that reducing harmful pollution is helping to protect people’s health across our city. Read the report in full here.
